Onlay Inlay

Faced with the gradual deterioration of dental structure caused by cavities or fractures, dental inlays and onlays are innovative solutions.

Not only do they restore the integrity of the tooth, but they also reinforce its structure while providing an aesthetic finish that seamlessly blends with the rest of your teeth, ensuring both a beautiful and functional solution for your smile.

A conservative technique

The inlay and onlay are indirect dental restorations: the inlay is used to repair a central part of the tooth, while the onlay covers one or more cusps or the entire chewing surface of a tooth.

Onlay Inlay: Key Steps in the Making

This custom-made prosthesis is fabricated in a dental laboratory, making it an indirect restoration technique in two phases:

During the first appointment, the dentist treats the affected tooth, removes infected tissues, and cleans the area. Then, a 3D optical impression of the affected tooth is taken, which will be used for the fabrication of a dental onlay inlay by the laboratory.

In a subsequent visit, the dentist inserts the prosthesis into the prepared cavity, checks its perfect fit, and securely fixes it to the tooth.

The Benefits of Inlay-Onlay

To restore a severely damaged tooth due to cavities, dental inlay-onlay offers several advantages:

It provides an aesthetic result as these dental substitutes are custom-made, replicating the tooth’s anatomy, texture, and shade. It strengthens and provides long-lasting protection to the tooth. It is perfectly sealed, reducing the risk of recurring cavities. It allows for the preservation of the maximum natural tooth structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What materials are onlays made of?

Onlays can be made from various materials, including ceramics or composite resin. The choice of material often depends on the patient’s and dentist’s preferences, as well as the location of the tooth being restored.

Is an onlay better than a crown?

It’s not necessarily a matter of “better” or “worse.” Onlays are often preferred for moderate restorations as they preserve more of the natural tooth structure. Crowns are more suitable when the tooth is heavily damaged.
