Bruxism treatment

Bruxism is a disorder that is characterized by grinding or clenching teeth, usually during the night. It can be caused by different factors such as stress, anxiety, the consumption of certain medications or the wrong position of the jaw.

Treatment for bruxism may include relaxation and stress management, cognitive behavioural therapy, or the use of protective devices.

The Michigan Splint (bruxism mouthguard)

The Michigan Splint is custom-made to fit the patient's mouth perfectly. It is used to protect the teeth and jaw in case of bruxism or excessive clenching of the teeth.

Here are the steps to make a Michigan splint:

  • The dentist makes an impression of the  patient’s mouth to create a model of the upper and lower jaw.
  • The model is sent to a dental laboratory, and the Michigan splint is produced.
  • The dentist adjusts it to ensure that it is comfortable and fits perfectly into the patient’s mouth.
  • The patient is asked to wear the splint overnight.

It is important to clean the splint regularly to avoid any risk of bacteria and fungi developing. For this, you can use a cleaning solution specially designed for splints or simply wash it in hot water with dishwashing liquid soap.

The lifespan of a protective splint:

The lifespan of a bruxism splint depends on several factors, such as the force applied during the night and the types of movements.

In general, a bruxism splint can last  from 1 to 5 years, or more, depending on the way it is used and maintained.

If you suffer from bruxism, it is important to receive appropriate treatment. Bruxism can cause many dental and mandibular problems if not treated in time, such as worn teeth, headaches or muscle or joint pain.
