Dental implants
Dental implants are medical devices used in dentistry to replace missing or damaged teeth. They are composed of an artificial metal root, usually titanium, which is inserted into the jawbone, and a ceramic or resin crown that is attached to the implant. Dental implants are an alternative to bridges and removable dentures, which can be less stable and less aesthetic.

Indications for dental implants
• Support of a removable prosthesis, such as a total denture.
There are several types of dental implants, which differ in shape, size and method of fixation. Dental implants can be placed individually, one by one, or in groups.
The stages of dental implant placement.
- Planning: before implant placement, a pre-implant consultation is performed to determine the condition of the bone and gums. X-rays and a 3D scanner may be needed to plan implant surgery.
- Implant surgery: the dentist under local anesthesia makes an incision of the gum and prepares the jaw bone to accommodate the implant.
- Implant fixation: The implant is screwed into the bone.
- Bone healing, osseointegration phase: while the jaw bone heals around the implant, often 3 to 6 months, the patient wears a temporary prosthesis.
- Crown placement: once the bone has healed sufficiently, normally 3 months after implant placement, the dentist attaches the crown to the implant.
There are some contraindications to dental implantation surgery, such as a lack of bone density or taking certain medications.
If the jaw bone does not have a sufficient bone volume or gum volume, it is however possible to proceed with a bone graft and / or a gum graft to overcome this problem.
Maintaining dental implants requires regular check-ups to the dentist, as well as brushing and flossing daily.

What are the advantages of the dental implant?
The dental implant offers multiple advantages:
- Aesthetics: the implant makes it possible to anchor a tooth similar in all respects to a natural tooth.
- Comfort: because it is firmly anchored in the alveolar bone, the tooth resists all natural stresses and pressures.
- Safety: implantology is a perfectly mastered discipline. The success rate is high. In case of implant failure, it is usually enough to replace the implant.
- Health: The dental implant stimulates the bone. Thus, it cannot be resorbed. Bone resorption, in the long term, can impact the morphology.
- Durable: a dental implant has a lifespan of more than 20 years, especially if you practice good oral hygiene.
